Why nobody can understand the economics of air travel

Cheapest round-trip ticket available, New York to Sydney, Australia (10,000 miles away), leaving August 8th, returning August 19th: $716

Well, I was looking to to vacation in Barcelona and NWA/KLM was getting me there via Amsterdam, another destination that I would like to visit.  Guess what?  When I tried to find a ticket to Amsterdam alone, it was more expensive than first going to Amsterdam and then to Barcelona, Spain.
